What to Expect in Your First Session
Starting something new, especially when it involves talking about your mental health, can feel intimidating. I want you to know that from the moment our session begins, my priority is making sure you feel comfortable, safe, and heard. We’ll start with a warm welcome and a quick check-in to make sure everything is working smoothly on your end. I’ll walk you through how the session will go and make sure you’re in a space where you can speak freely and without judgment.
Once we’re settled, I’ll take the time to understand what brings you here. This includes a thorough, respectful conversation about how depression has been affecting different areas of your life, your emotions, your energy levels, your sleep, work, relationships, and more. There’s no pressure to have the “right” answers, just an open, honest dialogue where you can express what you’ve been carrying.
Together, we’ll begin forming a plan that fits you. I’ll explain any diagnosis in clear, simple language and talk through all available treatment options, including whether medication may be helpful. My goal is to make sure you feel informed, empowered, and involved in every step of your care.
Before we wrap up, we’ll set a few realistic goals that matter to you, maybe it’s getting better sleep, feeling more emotionally balanced, or reconnecting with things that once brought you joy. We’ll also talk about your next steps and set up follow-up appointments to keep track of your progress and fine-tune your care along the way.

About Me
I earned my M.D. at Howard University College of Medicine (1985), alongside a family legacy through my great-uncle. After training at LA County–USC Medical Center, I embarked on a psychiatric career spanning hospitals, jails, community clinics, and private practice. Based in Kailua-Kona for over 30 years, I've integrated the islands’ community values into every session.
I’m committed to educating the public through speaking, media appearances, and my book Bad Jelly, which empowers individuals to overcome trauma and negative patterns.
Meet Bad Jelly – Your Growth Guide
Sometimes, the hardest part of healing is knowing where to begin. That’s why I wrote Bad Jelly, a self-help book created to gently guide you through the emotional clutter that holds so many people back. This book isn’t filled with complicated theories or clinical jargon. Instead, it’s built around simple, meaningful daily practices that help you break free from negativity and begin reshaping your thoughts in a healthier, more empowering direction.
Bad Jelly is especially helpful if you’re coping with depression, emotional trauma, or just feeling stuck in unhealthy patterns. It’s also a great companion for anyone looking to improve their overall mental well-being. The exercises are designed to be practical and accessible, something you can return to every day, even on the hardest ones.
What makes this book even more special is that it’s rooted in my experience working with real patients, people just like you, who wanted to heal but didn’t know how to start. And as a way of giving back, 10% of all proceeds go toward scholarships at Howard University College of Medicine, supporting the next generation of physicians and healers.
Whether you're starting your healing journey or looking for something to keep you grounded between sessions, Bad Jelly offers a compassionate, steady hand, helping you replace self-doubt with confidence, fear with strength, and confusion with clarity.
